Char-Broil The Big Easy Oil-Less Infrared Turkey Fryer (Lawn & Patio) First of all, let me say that we LOVED the food we cooked in this ‘fryer’. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed in that. We used it approximately five times, including Thanksgiving (and everyone loved the taste of the turkey).The problem is in the safety. The first several times we used it we had no problems at all. The last time we used it was at a big family get together on Memorial Day. I had both the Big Easy running with a turkey inside it and a smoker going (the Orion smoker – if they’re still making them that is an INCREDIBLE item to have). The turkey had been cooking for approximately two hours (and the Big Easy had been cleaned very thoroughly prior to use).There were about 15 adults in the side yard and 10 kids in the back yard – I was in the kitchen preparing other foods. One of my nephews came in and told me that the Big Easy was on fire. I thought he was simply being a drama queen since there IS fire inside the Big Easy but decided to go out and look. I’m VERY glad I did. The actual hose that connects the propane tank to the unit itself had caught on fire directly underneath the unit - and so did the area you see in the picture where the temperature control is. It was surreal – it looked like the old cartoons where you see the fuse slowly burning up to the dynamite…the hose was slowly burning up towards the propane tank. I immediately shut off the tank itself while my sister started stomping on the hose fire to put it out…in the meantime, the handle itself melted off and my sister stomped on that as well to put it out.We felt we were very lucky that my nephew saw this and had the sense to come in and tell someone. The adults were on the side of the house and couldn’t see it. I shudder to think what might have happened had the fire on the hose made it all the way to the propane tank.The next day, I called Char Broil to tell them what had happened…their only concern was ‘is anyone hurt’ and ‘is it past the warranty date’ (no and yes – by about a month). The y truly didn’t give a damn about what happened even though I sent them pictures of everything (the burnt hose, smashed and burnt dial, etc.).We will never buy anything from Char Broil again (we bought this particular unit at Home Depot rather than at Amazon). Any company that can make a unit this shoddy isn’t worth spending our money with (and yes, we had used it several times as mentioned and followed ALL safety guidelines).

Char-Broil The Big Easy Oil-Less Infrared Turkey Fryer (Lawn & Patio) We have been advocates of frying turkeys in oil. We bought this as the traditional fryer is so messy and you have to deal with all the oil. We have cooked 2 turkeys so far, 12lb & 16lb. The y cook at about the same rate as oil frying. The birds done in this cooker come out with a beautiful golden, crispy skin and the meat is juicy. How many times have you had a juicy turkey? Note, we always brine.The real test will be this Thanksgiving where we’ll spend with a friend who oil fries, the two birds will be cooked side-by-side.For those that save the carcus for soup, we saved the carcus and froze it. A couple of months later I made soup (which you can’t do with an oil fried turkey). This soup had the most flavor than any soup I’ve ever made! We will never go back to oil.

Char-Broil 10101480/08101480 The Big Easy Oil-Less Infrared Turkey Fryer (Lawn & Patio) OK we get it, if you are frying you need oil. This is not frying. We also get that frying is a quicker method of actually cooking. That being said, I cooked a 13 pound turkey at 10 minutes per pound, in 2 hours and 10 minutes. About an hour quicker than baking in oven, about an hour and a half longer than frying.I used a dry rub, no injection because I wanted to see how truly moist the turkey was after cooking. Hands down a fantastic turkey. Everyone commented on how moist and tasty the meat was.Pros:- Excellent results. Tasty, moist meat, crispy skin. I think it was as good if not better than traditional Frying.- Quicker than baking.- Frees up the oven- No $60 dollar investment on oil you use once or twice.- Drip pan catches the drippings for an excellent gravy (this is NOT to be underestimated).- Much easier to clean up.- When taking into account the heat-to-temp time for oil, this is only about 20 minutes longer in ‘Start to finish time.’- Marinades/Injections AND Dry Rubs can be used.Cons:- Oil cooks the meat much quicker- Traditional Fryer is much simpler and will last you longer for that simple fact.All in all, if you follow the directions (Breast up, Legs down, season the bucket and basket, etc.) you will have a great meal!

So when they asked what I wanted, I gave them this as a hint. I was anxious to try it after reading the reviews. I was not disappointed! It was by far the best turkey we have ever had, and I have been cooking for many years. I didn’t brine it as time got away from me, but there was no need. It was the most tender best tasting turkey I have ever had. Every one loved it. Not much clean up either. Another plus!!No oil! Everyone needs one of these.

I live in Massachusetts. Even though we have had a relatively warm winter, the temperature on Thanks Giving seemed to be too low for this infra-red cookder.Unfortunately, I could not find any warning or specification from the manufacturer that allerted me to the possible effect of a low ambient temperature on the capability of this cooker to thorougly cook a turkey. So, my Thanks Giving was ruined! Please beware!

Masterbuilt 20100809 Butterball Oil-Free Electric Turkey Fryer and Roaster (Lawn & Patio) A few years ago, I had a bad grease spill in my oven when I was cooking a large turkey. I was very lucky that the oven did not catch fire. Since then, I have been nervous whenever I cooked a turkey in the oven. I saw an ad about an indoor electric fryer that used oil. It looked as though it might be safer but I didn’t like the fact that it used oil (even though everyone I know who has eaten deep fried turkey has raved about it). I stumbled upon an ad for the Masterbuilt Oil-Free Electric Fryer. I bought it. Could not be happier. It is so safe and easy. The manufacturer put a lot of thought into this product. Incredibly user friendly. My first turkey was 18 pounds(the maximum size). Actual cooking time was under 3 hours. My relatives raved about it being moist. I find that you have to pre-heat the roaster for at least an hour but, still, it is well worth it. It frees up the oven and it’s incredibly safe and easy. I don’t have to spend money on oil and worry about how to dispose of it. Before this oil-free fryer, I was never thrilled about cooking a turkey. Now I look forward to do so. Love this product.
